Hi everyone,

Granddaddy was also a financial investor.

Granddaddy became an investor by pulling bark and gambling and saving his money. When he accumulated enough toward $600, he went to Evergreen and told Mr. Jenkins, a white landowner, “I want to buy that forty-acre piece of land you got for sale.”

Old Man Jenkins asked, “Adam, where are you going to get $600.00 to pay for it?”

“I got $400.00 in my pocket.”

Mr. Jenkins looked surprised. Then, he said, “Adam, I guess you earned this money pulling bark and gambling.”

Granddaddy thought Mr. Jenkins was wrong to ask the source of his money. So, he did not answer.

Surprised, Mr. Jenkins took the $400.00 and told Granddaddy the agreement. “Adam, you have six months to pay in full. If you miss that payment, I won’t sell you the land, and you won’t get your $400.00 back.”

Granddaddy looked straight in Mr. Jenkins’ eyes and said, “I understand.”

Five month after the deal was made, Granddaddy carried Mr. Jenkins $200.00.

“Adam, I guess you raised this money, too, pulling bark and gambling. I heard you got a good hand at both.”

Again, without comment about the source of his labor that earned $200.00, Granddaddy said, “Mr. Jenkins, I want my papers showing that I own the forty acres of land that used to be yours.”

They went to the Evergreen Courthouse, near Cohassett, had the papers filled out, and both signed them, clinching Granddaddy’s ownership of forty-one acres of land in Evergreen.
