Hi everyone,

Granddaddy understood that for Daddy to run a good farm staff, he needed disciplinary power, and, therefore gave him authority over his sisters and brothers work life.

As a result, Daddy disciplined his sisters and brothers, too. He whipped Gilbert, Willie Lee, Charlie, and Jack. Then, one day, Gilbert threw an object in the house, and Daddy broke a limb off the peach tree and beat him hard. Uncle Gilbert knew he had to obey Daddy or get another whipping from Granddaddy.

Sometimes my uncles and aunts would get a double whipping. Daddy whipped them and told Granddaddy and Grand Mama about their wrong behavior. They whipped them again. Daddy didn't ever tell a lie on his brothers and sisters, and they didn’t get angry with him for reporting their behavior.

Daddy caused them to get lots of whippings because he was honest and reported their wrongful behavior to my grandparents. Nevertheless, during their years at Granddaddy’s house, Daddy enjoyed his sisters’ and brothers’ respect for his authority, and he encouraged them to raise bountiful crops for Granddaddy, however, during his last years on earth, his sisters and brothers did not visit him often, like they did each other.

Black men should control their homes with authority and never turn any of it over to the oldest or any child, for that matter, because no matter how loving a family is, at some point in life, there will be a difference between the governing child and his or her sisters and brothers, with shining exceptions. For example, in older age, they will keep each other company more than they will keep their older sibling company.

Again, there are exceptions, but it is important for dads and moms to control their children in all areas of their life.
