Hi everyone,

I am almost in the world.

Finally, Mama’s womb gaped open and reluctantly began releasing me as Mittie Billups waited, patiently, to receive me carefully into her welcoming hands. My twenty-four year old Mama had done it. She birthed me, Annie Lee Shaw, a Fourth Generation Shaw family member.

Miss Billups, Mama’s midwife, yelled and celebrated, as though it were the first time her seasoned hands had ever delivered a newborn. Her dark eyes glowed in the dimly lit room. Opening her small black leather pouch, fit for a rural medical doctor, she took out her special knife and quickly cut the umbilical cord, expertly. My angry cries assured the midwife and my proud parents that I was alive, healthy, and in possession of a strong baby voice.

Daddy smiled, cupped his hands together and exclaimed, “I got a sweet little girl to love the rest of my life.”

To be continued next time.
