Hi everyone,

Uncle Sam and Mama Sarah, who lived with us, waited excitedly for news of my birth.

When Daddy knocked on their bedroom door and exclaimed, “Annie Bell and I got a sweet baby girl!” Uncle Sam burst out in a big smile and shook Daddy’s hand. “Well, I declare, Adam,” he said. “We sure are happy for you and Annie Bell.”

After meeting me, Mama told me years later, Uncle Sam and Mama Sarah spoke good words over me. Uncle Sam said, “That baby girl is going to grow up and be a good woman.” Mama Sarah chimed in, “Yeah, Sam. I can see it in her face. She’s going to make something good out of herself.”

I do not know whether they knew that speaking positively over and about babies was a good thing today.

Today, we know that parents should never speak one negative word about their baby, child, or adult and, of course, there are folks who look at new babies and say all kinds of this, such as who they favor, and the person may not be good person. For certain, parents should speak good things over their children for the children’s good and cancel out, in speech, anything negative or useless said to your children at any age and, if the speaker speaks louder and more convince the negative they are saying than the positive you are speaking, cancel it out in words to the speaker and, if the speaker continues to speak negatively, as soon as you get out hearing distance of that person, cancel it out, with all your might, with the help of God and do this several times, until you feel that the negative words are dissolved and will never be associated with your children.

Mama Sarah looked forward to taking care of Mama and me after Miss Billups’ time was up, which pleased Mama. When Miss Billups was ready to go, mid-morning of April 15, 1932, she picked up her black pouch and, as she made her way to the door, Daddy handed her two live hens, with their feet tied, as payment for delivering me. What a huge baby delivery fee!

Mama had birthed a Fourth Generation Shaw family member, and the midwife’s fee was affordable and, happily paid.
