My Alabama Shaw Family on My Father’s Side From 1861-2014

Hi everyone,

Granddaddy’s decision to change his last name from Shaw to Boykin, the name of his married parents, was met by two different family views.
Though Daddy and his brothers and sisters grew up as Shaw, in 1935, when I was three years old, Granddaddy decided to change his name from Shaw to Boykin to make it clear he was not born outside of marriage and to improve his family’s status. As you recall, my great-grandmother Julie gave my family the name Shaw, the name of one of her lovers, before she married my great granddaddy Josh Boykin and birthed Granddaddy Adam Shaw, Sr. All my uncles and aunts go changed their name to Boykin and Daddy and our family are Shaw.

Granddaddy shows that all adverse behavior white man has taught us, about the family and our relations to each other, we can and should change it and stomp out the ever-present jealousy streak, against each other, in our race. Let us love each other. I know it feels better than hateful white racism the worst scourge against us. Jealousy is the second worst scourge in the black race, regardless of gender.

With white man’s scourge of racism, let’s hope he changes and let each one of us pray jealousy out of our hearts and, for sure, God will help us.
