Hi everyone,

Mr. Marshall’s two relatives, in the Antebellum Era, were talented and favored by their white slave master.

His grandmother on his father’s side was a famous seamstress who sewed for a few blacks, but mainly for whites. One of his grandmother’s sisters developed a “good hand” in canning fruit and making pickles, and white people came from long distances to get some of the fruit and pickles she had canned.

Mr. Marshall’s relatives scream a good motto for me and all other blacks. Be good, if not the best in something worthwhile that is useful to blacks and whites.

Yes, I know that, when whites find that blacks do something well, they employ them more than blacks get the opportunity to buy their services. Moreover, this story tells everyone to be talented and share your skills or perform services for blacks equal to what you do for whites. For example, if you are a photographer, take black people’s pictures with the same excellence that you take white people’s This is not true now, and I ask you, starting in 2016, to make it true and pass it down through the generations.

Nevertheless, I ask all blacks to develop their own talents and be the best at something that they ca, for that is the only way they can feel truly good about themselves.

I am learning that my great grandmother’s peers are teaching us lessons from their lives in the Antebellum Era that are useful for us today. Let’s use them.
