Hi everyone,

Mama and Daddy needed to work the land, together, to eke out a living.

Mama told me in later years, “I had to help your daddy work the land,” Similarly, Mama recalled, “I took you to the fields with me and laid you down to rest on a soft pallet between the rows of corn, cotton, and peanuts. When I could find it, I always made sure to place you in the shade of the tree. Sometimes, we were lucky because there was a nearby tree. You loved the cool breezes and that made you feel good."

Most of all, I did not want you to grow up with a mind to sharecrop all your life.
